Usui Shiki Ryoho
The Usui System of Natural Healing
Reiki is a spiritual healing art and a natural system of healing where the Reiki Practitioner holds space for Universal Life Force Energy to flow through her to the client for relaxation, stress relief and in some cases, healing for the mind, body and soul. Reiki is a non-invasive complementary therapy that uses a light touch (or no touch at all if preferred) to help with ailments from pain to depression.
Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1920’s. Usui was a lifelong spiritual aspirant, a lay monk with a wife and two children. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy.
The traditions and methods of Mikao Usui were passed through several grandmasters of Reiki. Today, Reiki takes many forms, however, The Usui System of Natural Healing is still the form most widely practiced. Practitioners and Master Teachers are trained through an initiation process where Masters pass on their knowledge and expertise to their students.
Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki Practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and to help others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.
A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. A session is pleasant and relaxing and is often utilized for one’s personal wellness.
Teresa is a Certified Reiki/Master Teacher with lineages going back to Mikao Usui. She has practiced Reiki for herself and her clients since 2011.
What to Expect During Your Reiki Session
Before the Reiki session begins, Teresa will ask you a few questions to ascertain what your concerns are. Then, fully clothed, you will make yourself comfortable on a heated (depending on your preference) massage table. Teresa will take you through a short, relaxing meditation and say a prayer to invite in the Reiki energy. Using gentle hand placements (or if you prefer no touch, she will hover her hands over the positions) she will guide the Reiki energy to all areas of the body.
As the session progresses, you will feel more relaxed. If you become uncomfortable, you can adjust your position at any time. Be sure to ask for anything that will add to your comfort, such as additional support under your knees or a blanket. This is your special time and Teresa wants to ensure the best experience for you.
The experience of Reiki is as different as the people who come for sessions. Often heat is experienced from the practitioner’s hands, but sometimes the practitioner’s hands feel refreshingly cool. Other common experiences are subtle pulsations where the practitioner’s hands are placed or cascading waves of pulsations throughout the body.
People often comment how comforting they find the experience of Reiki to be. An interesting study reported that recipients frequently feel that they are hovering in a threshold state of consciousness, simultaneously aware of their surroundings and deeply indrawn. Some people fall into a deep, sleeplike meditative state. Sometimes the experience of Reiki is dramatic, while for other people, the first session in particular may be uneventful, although they feel somehow better afterward. The most common experience is an almost immediate release of stress and a feeling of deep relaxation.
Reiki is cumulative and even people who don’t notice much the first time usually have progressively deeper experiences if they continue. Besides the immediate experience of Reiki, you may notice other changes that continue to unfold as the day goes on: perhaps easier digestion, a sense of being more centered and poised and less reactive, and sleeping deeply that night.
Receiving Reiki is a wonderfully passive experience. Don’t try to relax – let the Reiki energy relax you. Your state will shift quite naturally as the session proceeds. Meanwhile feel free to daydream, enjoy the music, or simply observe your breath or the sensations of the therapy.
Distance Reiki Sessions
One wonderful aspect of distance or remote Reiki is that you can be anywhere to receive it. Distance Reiki is just as effective as experiencing it in person – Reiki energy “works” regardless of where you are located since it transcends time and physical space. Having a session in the comfort of your own home can often times be more relaxing since you don’t have to spend the time driving to and from Tender Spirit Reiki’s studio.
A distance Reiki session is usually about 30-40 minutes long and can be scheduled by clicking the button below. By setting up a specific time, you will be in a receptive state (such as lying down or meditating during the treatment). In advance of the session, Teresa will email you asking for your location and any intention you have of what you want the session to support (e.g. a physical or health issue, goal, or challenge). Having these details will help Teresa connect with you if you haven’t hand an in-person session with her. Wherever you are in the world, you can follow these steps to help you prepare to receive and be in allowance, of Reiki healing energy.
